Origins of the name

The Saunders name dates back, on early records in England, to Cambridge, London and Middlesex in the 1600s. Later in the 1700s records show the name in Norfolk and by the 1800s many other counties.

Place names

The Saunders name appears on migration ships in the 1700s to America, and later in the 1800s the name appears in Australia. In Nebraska, USA, there is a Saunders County and several organisations with the Saunders name.

In Wales there is the small seaside town of Saundersfoot in Pembrokeshire. There is also a Saunders Street in Southport, Merseyside. Sanderstead is in London and Sanderton in Buckinghamshire. From other people's research the name itself is said to derive from Sandes, it then became Sanders before turning into Saunders.

Famous family

Today probably the most famous Saunders is the comedian Jennifer Saunders. There is also many others including Ben Saunders, the Arctic explorer.

The name is linked to the Wellham family through the descendants of Alice Saunders born in the late 1800s, she married Arthur Bullock of Bishops Frome, England. They had a son Edwin Bullock born 1915 of Madersfield, Malvern, England. He married Doris Watkins born 1918, they had a son Anthony James Bullock.

Anthony Bullock married Christine Sylvia Dunkley of Chatham in Kent. They had three daughters Debbie, Diane and Sally. Anthony re-married to Patricia Nunney, they had a son Gary. Diane Bullock married Simon Wellham of Worcester, they had two sons Jamie and Luke Wellham.
